| FOREWORD
To
those with dyslexia, I owe an apology for not making this method
available earlier. However, multiple attempts to develop the necessary
dyslexic treated and control groups, for statistical comparison,
were unsuccessful. Manuscript submissions, to medical journals
on three separate occasions, were unsuccessful in passing peer
review
screening. The problems inherent in developing good solid data
could never be fulfilled.
The method has
been effectively used in various regions. Method instruction has
been given to Nevada educators through Great Basin College in Elko,
Nevada. A non-profit United Dyslexia Association utilizes the method
and it is very active in Wyoming and Oklahoma. Both dyslexic adults
and children are taught this required reading method without charge.
Although I
have been using the method on an individual basis for many years,
it
has never been used along with a large non-treated control group.
The method’s success is its own obstacle. Attempts at use
of a control group brought opposition by the method’s supporters.
This was due to the fact that the control group children could
be
held back in school while the treated group was promoted.
This reading
method is actually very simple and indeed cost effective. Dyslexics
are merely required to use a stereopsis type eye exercise that is
a life long necessity. This is coupled with a new method of reading.
Both appear to be required as each alone is not completely functional.
Method use has never been associated with any untoward effects.
Surprisingly, to stop using the eye exercise produces a return to
previous reading problems.
This reading
method is not a substitute for any or all reading programs. It is
a method that corrects dyslexic reading problems such as wavy or
blurring words, joining of words, letter and word reversals, fabrication
of words and adding wrong words. Periods, commas and apostrophes
are now clearly seen, as well.
Generally,
dyslexics receive only three separate instruction sessions. The
first visit is for evaluation and instruction in use of an eye exercise.
The second is for demonstration of the required reading method.
The third is a review of the reading method as well as the demonstration
of how to write and look at maps, telephone books and computer screens.
Method interpretation
may be thought of as either a palliative relief from dyslexia or
actual correction of dyslexic visual abnormalities. Its use allows
for employment of any acceptable reading program as determined for
age or reading level. The bell shape curve for abilities would then
be the expected result.
This method
is based upon an ocular-motor origin for dyslexia. However, the
scientific literature offers little or no support for a dyslexia
visual origin. Dyslexia is presented here as an error in stereopsis
that is easily corrected.
Science editors
have a commitment and obligation to demand rigid research requirements
for any submitted research papers. This would be a more stringent
requirement where a new theory or method conflicts with current
scientific beliefs.
After failing
to have the method published in a medical journal, a descriptive
book was published. However, it had only a limited circulation.
Surprisingly, an advertisement for the book in one home schooling
magazine was refused because of the use of dyslexia. One reviewer
also felt it couldn’t be dyslexia that was being treated
because dyslexia was uncorrectable.
I am a medical
Pathologist and the method was only accidentally discovered for
personal use. The following is an evaluation form and believed mechanism
of action that supports the causation of dyslexia as an abnormality
in stereopsis.
